6.4 Observability and monitoring

At the start of this chapter, one of the challenges we described was the fragmented nature of serverless systems. This is a common problem with distributed systems composed of many small parts. It can lead to a lack of understanding of the running behavior of the system, making it difficult to solve problems and make changes. The problem has become better-understood as microservice architecture is more widely adopted. With serverless applications utilizing third-party managed services, the problem is especially prevalent. These managed services are, to some degree, black boxes.
